2017 Black Shiraz

October 2018

I’m so thrilled to say that the 2017 RED by Caroline Dunn Black Shiraz is now available. There was such a great response to the barrel samples we tasted during the Naked Wines Angel tastings in Melbourne and Sydney last month, so I’m delighted to have had the wine finished and bottled and at your fingertips a little ahead of schedule.

I was asked a lot during the tastings ‘what is Black Shiraz?’ Well, ‘Black’ is simply the wine’s name. But it’s also reflective of its style. From next year (2018 vintage) I will have two Shiraz on offer – one with a red label and the other black. The Red Shiraz will have more fragrant, lifted red berry flavours while the Black Shiraz is darker and deeper, with more black fruits and black spice. From 2017 vintage, though, there is only the one – the Black Shiraz.

“Light Pass is known for making bright, plush, elegant wines with purity of fruit and fine tannin structures.”

I’m so excited about this wine – it comes from two of my favourite vineyards, Kurtz and Ubertas – super-dedicated growers who are as passionate about Shiraz as I am. There are lots of different styles of Barossa Shiraz, depending on which sub-region they hail from (as well as being influenced by the ‘house style’ of the winemaker). The 2017 Black Shiraz was sourced from the Light Pass sub-region in the upper central Barossa Valley. Shiraz from this area is known for making bright, plush, elegant wines with purity of fruit and fine tannin structures. Concentrated dark berry flavours are lifted with a touch of spiciness contributed by the cooling effects of afternoon gully winds flowing down from the adjacent Eastern slopes.

I hope you enjoy it!
