Best of the Barossa!
Very exciting news from the 2023 Barossa Wine Show last night!
My soon-to-be-released Red by Caroline Dunn Mataro 2022 won three trophies, including the BIG ONE – the Best Wine of Show.
The Riedel Trophy for Best Mataro/Mourvèdre
The Seguin Moreau Trophy for Best Red Wine
The Orora Beverage Trophy for Best Barossa Wine
Top Gold Medal – Class 19, Dry Mataro/Mourvèdre, Vintage 2022 or older

The Orora Beverage Trophy for Best Barossa Wine
This is such great news for a Mataro to be awarded the Best Barossa wine, coming up trumps to win what is traditionally a very Shiraz-dominated trophy.
I was there to celebrate at the wine show presentation dinner with my amazing Mataro grower, Neil Hahn. The fruit was sourced from his vineyard in the Light Pass region of the Barossa Valley.
Big thanks go to Neil as well as the whole team involved in growing and making this wine.

The Seguin Moreau Trophy for Best Red Wine
The Judges comments: Beautiful bouquet of blueberry, juicy, vibrant and bright, lovely freshness, buoyancy and percussion. Good length and persistence.

The Riedel Trophy for Best Mataro/Mourvedre
It was an exciting night for all champions of ‘other’ varieties, Mataro in particular, as it was the very first time a Mataro has won the Best Barossa Wine trophy that has traditionally been a very Shiraz-dominated award.
Once again, it was such a pleasure to receive this award with the Barossa Wine Show being the ‘local’ show, and it’s wonderful to know that this wine has shown up so well amongst its regional peers.
