Single Vineyard Wines
For those who love wine, a special bottle for Christmas can be just the ticket. There are lots of reasons why a wine might be considered special. The ability to stash it in the cellar for a few years to bring out on a celebratory occasion is certainly one of those reasons. So is the wine’s pedigree. And for someone with an interest in a wine’s origins, single vineyard wines can be the ideal option – they’re the perfect way to get to know a wine’s origins and how the vineyard expresses itself from vintage to vintage.
Much of wine’s intrigue and fascination, for us, stems from the fact that every wine has its own unique story to tell. Single vineyard wines may not taste exactly the same from year to year… and therein lies their beauty. In a single vineyard wine, every seasonal variation, every sod of soil, every ray of sunshine, every drop of rain and every winemaking decision is etched into the wine’s very nature. We get an insight, even, into the weather when the grapes were picked. Was it fine, was it wet, was it warm, was it cool?
Collecting single vineyard wines from year to year allows a backstage glimpse into the vineyard and how the qualities of the vintage have impacted its style, structure and flavour.
We’ve just released our 2020 Dolan & Dunn Vineyard Selection Barossa Valley Shiraz. It was sourced, once again, from Peter Sonntag’s outstanding vineyard in the Stonewell subregion of the Barossa. Both the Sonntag family and the subregion of Stonewell are synonymous with longstanding viticultural tradition. The vineyard’s soils and microclimate give the wine its distinctive inky black colour, intense flavour, and fine, silky tannins.
We’re thrilled with this vintage, with its aromatic dark fruit characters of blackberry, blueberry and blood-plum, with hints of chocolate, anise, black olive and charcuterie. It’s a wine of generosity and elegance, with dark, lively, fleshy fruit backed by beautifully integrated spicy oak and silky yet defined tannins. Lush, juicy and supple with a fine, structural line and lingering fruit flavours.
We hope you enjoy it 🙂
