Barossa Wine Show Trophy Win
The 2021 Barossa Wine Show was judged this week and I was extremely chuffed to be awarded a Top Gold Medal and the JBG Architects Trophy for Best Red Wine, Other Varieties for the Red by Caroline Dunn Barossa Valley Mataro 2020 at the Presentation Dinner last night.
It was such a pleasure to receive this award as the Barossa Wine Show is the home-turf show for those of us who make wine from the region and it’s really gratifying to know that this wine has stood up proudly amongst its regional peers. Out of a total of 28 trophies awarded, the vast majority went to the ‘big guys’, with only 4 won by small, independent producers like me. It was fabulous to be in the company of such a select few.
The Judges comments: Mid red colour. Fresh plush black fruit nose, harmonious and balanced, lovely purple fruit, good shape and finish on the end.
I’d like to extend my thanks and congratulations to my wonderful growers, Peter Sonntag at Stonewell and Neil Hahn at Light Pass who grew such exceptional fruit in 2020. While some varieties struggled through the drought conditions, Mataro thrived. Huge thanks and congratulations also to the entire winery team for their outstanding attention to detail, as always.
If you haven’t tried it yet, I hope the Trophy might have piqued some interest. And I hope you enjoy it just as much as the judges did.
Cheers,
Caroline.
